US Coast Guard Information Systems

My research team in the Department of Human-Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington worked together with the US Coast Guard to improve USCG information and communication practices. My team observed and interviewed members of the Operations Unit of the U.S. Coast Guard in order to gain insight into their practices. We then set our findings within the context of information theory and provided design recommendations. Recommendations included: 

• Consider informal and formal communication
• Consider the purpose of each information exchange
• Deliver the appropriate quantity and quality of information to each user
